A mouthwatering mash-up of two beloved comfort foods, this Pizza Burger layers juicy beef patties with zesty pizza sauce, melty mozzarella and crispy pepperoni for an indulgent, handheld feast. It’s easy enough for weeknight dinners but impressive enough for weekend cook-outs.
1 lb ground beef (80/20 ratio)
1 tsp Italian seasoning
½ tsp garlic powder
Salt and black pepper, to taste
8 oz sliced pepperoni
4 oz shredded mozzarella (about 1 cup)
4 tbsp pizza sauce, plus extra for serving
4 burger buns
1 tbsp olive oil
Fresh basil leaves or chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)
In a bowl gently combine the ground beef, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt and pepper—taking care not to overwork the meat. Divide into four equal portions and shape each into a patty about ¾ inch thick, pressing a slight indentation into the center to promote even cooking.
Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high and brush the buns’ cut sides with olive oil. Place the patties on the hot surface and cook for 4 minutes undisturbed. Flip each patty, spoon about 1 tbsp of pizza sauce onto each, then layer two pepperoni slices and a quarter of the mozzarella on top. Cover (or tent with foil) and cook 3–4 minutes more, until cheese is melted and the burger reaches your preferred doneness.
Meanwhile, toast the buns, cut-side down, for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden. Spread remaining pizza sauce on both the top and bottom buns.
To assemble, place each sauced bottom bun on a plate, top with the pepperoni-cheese burger, then crown with the bun top. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired and serve immediately, offering extra pizza sauce or hot honey for dipping.
For crispier pepperoni, flash-fry the slices in a hot, dry skillet for 30 seconds per side before topping the burger. Swap ground turkey or plant-based crumbles for beef if you prefer a leaner or vegetarian option. Make these ahead for a party by cooking patties through, cooling, then refrigerating; reheat in a covered skillet with a splash of water to steam them hot again before adding sauce, cheese and pepperoni. If you like a bit of heat, stir red pepper flakes or a few dashes of hot sauce into your pizza sauce before spreading.
