Mexican Restaurant-Style Cheese Dip

This creamy, smooth cheese dip is just like the kind you get at your favorite Mexican restaurant. Made with real white American cheese, a touch of cream, and flavorful seasonings, it’s perfect for parties, game day, or anytime you crave a cheesy snack. Adjust the heat with jalapeños if you like a spicy twist.

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb white American cheese, shredded or cubed (deli counter cheese works best)
1/2 cup milk (or more for desired consistency)
1/4 cup heavy cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
1 (4 oz) can diced green chiles, undrained
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
12 teaspoons diced jalapeños (optional, for heat)
Salt, to taste
Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Melt the Cheese
In a medium saucepan, combine the white American cheese and milk over low heat. Stir constantly to prevent the cheese from burning, until the cheese is fully melted and smooth.

Step 2: Add Flavor
Stir in the heavy cream, diced green chiles, cumin, garlic powder, and onion powder. Add the jalapeños if you prefer a spicy kick. Mix well.

Step 3: Adjust Consistency
If the dip is too thick, add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. Taste and adjust with salt, if needed.

Step 4: Serve
Pour the cheese dip into a serving bowl and garnish with chopped cilantro. Serve warm with tortilla chips, vegetables, or as a topping for tacos, burritos, or nachos.

Notes

Using real white American cheese from the deli counter gives the best authentic texture and flavor. If you prefer an even silkier dip, the heavy cream makes it extra luscious. Keep the dip warm in a small slow cooker or warming dish during serving to maintain the perfect texture.
